The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, though deeply respected by most artists has received criticism in the past notably because of the judges. The criticism is down to the fact that very few judges on the panel have any experience in this field; this has lead to the accusation of simply inducting personal favourites. They have also been accused of inducting artists that will attract big crowds as opposed to pioneers of rock n roll who may deserve the induction more. Although there has been thousands of written complaints the biggest impact was made by the always controversial sex pistols in 2006 by refusing to turn up to their induction referring to it as a ‘piss-stain’ although very funny, it damages the reputation of the only real official worldwide hall which honours these artists.
In 2009 the following are set to be inducted;
Chic
Wanda Jackson
Little Anthony & The Imperials
Metallica
Run-DMC
The Stooges
War
Bobby Womack
Jeff Beck
These inductees seem very reasonable, but still no place for Deep Purple which seems very strange. The induction of Run DMC further continues the line of artists who don’t necessarily fit in with rock n roll but still have made contributions, other artists like this include Miles Davis and The Temptations. Is this continues I think there should be room for such artists as Michael Hedges – although not classed as rock has added tremendous depth through his innovative use of the acoustic guitar.
A final point is that I respect the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and has managed to keep certain commercial acts from being inducted, although I don’t agree with Percy Sledge being there.
